Halo: Combat Evolved
Originally made for the Xbox, Halo eventually came to the PC in 2003. It quickly became a popular multiplayer game, and spurned many leagues in the gaming community. Halo multiplayer is a great combination game, providing users with the standard FPS action, but also allowing them to be able to operate vehicles. There are also numerous gameplay types, such as Capture The Flag, Slayer, Race, King of the Hill, Oddball, and many other variations. There were also a dozen or so linear style maps so that the advantage isn't overwhelmingly stacked in one teams' favor.
Eventually, community modders created an unsupported online version of Halo Multiplayer called Halo Custom Edition (Halo CE). Many people created maps for this game - there are probably near 1,000 floating on the net. However, Halo CE didn't take off as a lot of people thought it was, due to the fact it wasn't supported by the Bungie, the original game makers, and that there weren't many dedicated servers for users to play on.
Halo has been the staple game of SlingBlades since December of 2003, when the clan was first formed. We almost singlehandedly popularized the version of Halo that we play, which is no-shields.
No-shields play provides for one shot kills, and also gives the advantage to better shooters, compared to people that operate the heavy armored vehicles. We always got mixed reactions from people that would come into our no-shields server. Some would attempt to talk trash, stating how no-shields is easier than playing with shields, and some people would love it and comment on how much more challenging it is. Either way, we've decided to stick to our no-shields play.
At the height of our playing time, we ranked #1 in slayer on csports.net, which is a site that ranks various clans and players from all different types of games. We must've held this ranking for at least a total of one year (not consecutively).
In recent months, Halo has died down, and few people play anymore. It was extremely hard to find people to play with, because we would always be accused of cheating (we weren't) just because we were so much better than everyone else. There was simply no challenge anymore. So now, SlingBlades has it's main focus on CS:S, where the competition is tougher and we have to work our way up to gain respect.
But we still do play Halo from time to time, and would welcome you to stop by our dedicated server if you'd like to play with us.
